The Dorset Wob December 27, pm. Imperialist racist shit. Ron Mack January 29, pm. The Zulus were every bit as Imperialist as the British and every bit as racist to non-Zulu tribes they conquered.

The British were taught a bitter lesson. Egged on by supposedly superior arms and technology, drunken on a brew of arrogance and unproven superiority towards native peoples, they got taught by savages on how not to be condescending. No excuses please, the better generals won. Surinder January 25, am. Who were the savages, those who forcibly subjugated other people, or those who were peacefully living in their own country and minding their own business?

It is disingenuous to judge people of the Victorian age by modern standards. The Victorians were empire builders in a long line of empires stretching back over years of history. Please stop with the racist judgemental rubbish and stick to military history. John michael December 29, pm.

Africa: Zulu Empire - Last Stands and Changing Fortunes - Extra History - #4

The reports after the battle state the bellies of dead British soldiers had been slit open but this was not as an act of mutilation but out of respect for the dead. No doubt this got distorted as these so called drummer boys were found in the same condition.

Mrfairchap January 25, pm. I think the most important aspect of the battle was the tragic heroism displayed by both sides. Why on earth were they killing each other? The British believed they were saving Natal from Zulu savagery. The Zulus believed they were protecting their sacred lands from foreign invasion.

Overall, I tend to side with the Zulus. There was surely room in the vast expanses of South Africa for everybody! The Boers in South Africa before the Zulus???? Wake up you daydreaming!

Introduction

When did the Dutch come to South Africa? The Dutch arrived in and settled first in The Zulus were founded in by Zulu kaNtombela. Their Nguni forbearers came from East Africa and migrated down over the centuries but they were not Zulus as we know it. Therefore, I am correct and do not need to wake up or stop day dreaming. If you wish to engage in a military history discussion then fine but do a bot or research before you comment on my posts please.

You are a Neo Imperialist piece of shit. No wonder why your Country is now suffering the backlash of his Colonial Greed in invading other Lands they had no business being in. The fella is just trying to Whitewash History by claiming the Dutch lived in the area before the Zulus.

While the Zulus was a Tribe which Evolved from the Indigenous people who had settled in the Area Loooong before the Dutch even arrived in the area. Whitey likes to lie so as defend Imperialism. Tim April 14, pm. Using the term whitey is offensive so please desist. People emigrate from their countries of origin all of the time.

Silly person. Very true. The British were the bullies and Ilegal Invaders who Waged wars to Rob something that never belonged to them. Its Racism at its best. Nelly March 31, am. Typical attitude of a thieve! Get a grip and grow up. Throughout history everybody everywhere attacked each other and stole and conquered or were conquered. After years of being attacked by Scandanavian and European powers the British fought back and started their own Empire. The fact your own warlike ancestors got their arses severely kicked is not my problem to deal with.

Although many have succumbed to vagrancy this is due to interference by the white man. Minerva May 30, am. Thanks Leonidas — I just wish people would stick to military history and not make political points on this forum. You also made Political points to justify the indefensible,so you need to come down your high horse before you throw rocks from a Glass House.

Minerva March 14, pm. The strong detachment was overwhelmed by more […]. Most experts say approx Zulus died, ie very similar to the British losses.

But that means, on average, every British soldier only killed one Zulu. The battle lasted 4 hours, and for most of that time the British Firing Line held the Zulus at bay. Each soldier usually carried 70 rounds of ammo, so 70, bullets probably fired, plus the 2 field guns. Anyone have any thoughts?? Jaz November 12, pm. Most bullets would not be fatal, there are stories of the zulu carrying warriors away with them. The number hit by bullets is probably more than double the killed. Cuan Elgin October 4, pm. They paid the price. The earlier blogger who referred to the Boers as being an older nation than the Zulus, is entirely correct.

Further, the Trekboers occupied a hinterland left virtually uninhabited by the genocidal rampages of both Shaka and Mzilikaze, so they had as much claim to those areas, as anyone else. Thank you Cuan Elgin for your insights and level headed comments. Cuan Elgin January 21, pm. Indeed, Brian. It is thus very important to try to obtain eyewitness accounts from the period being studied, from both sides of any given situation, and to then seek the unbroken thread of truth therein. Minerva January 21, pm. Others had the modified Enfield muzzle loader, in which the Snider breechblock was inserted.

This unsatisfactory compromise weapon, was the first British breechloading, fixed cartridge Boxer , centre-fire rifle. Rate of fire was relatively slow. Fortunately the Zulus were bad shots.

Campaigning in southern Africa in: The Victorian soldier in Africa

What went wrong? The camp was widely spread out and concentrated firepower behind a fixed defence was not employed. The 1 men, in 10 separate units were thinly spread on the ground for a distance of about one mile or 1 yards 1 in. They fell into two ranks, one behind the other, but the line was ragged with gaps between, allowing the enemy to rush through and attack the defenders from the rear. This especially occurred when the Natal Native Contingent early in the battle broke and fled, leaving a gap in the defence line, yards m wide.
